Cast in Bronze, this sculpture was originally carved by Alexander G. Weygers in 1948 from a piece of manzanita wood. Nicodemus, Joseph, and a helper are depicted lowering Jesus from the cross to prepare his body for burial. Inspired by the 1435 painting by Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden, Descent from the Cross, Weygers used his skill as a sculptor to tell the story of Christ through emotion and composition. Though the figures are grouped so closely that only parts of the scene can be discerned, the four faces display the poignant emotion of the moment. Carved with the fine precision of a master engraver, this sculpture is a powerful depiction of the mourning of Christ’s followers, and the days of grief before his joyous resurrection.
